In front of Cabo Pulmo’s coast, the largest coral reef in the Gulf of California can be found. It was declared as a Natural Protected Area in 1995 as a result of the joint effort of the local community, academia, governmental offices and civil society.
In the span of 20+ years of protection efforts the Cabo Pulmo reef has recovered from overfishing, allowing the recovery of the fish biomass in this no-take Marine Reserve.
Cabo Pulmo has been declared UNESCO’s Natural Heritage Site and a RAMSAR site.
EcoAdventures is managed by Juan y Javier Castro, who had their first experiences in tourism working in one of the first diving companies in Cabo Pulmo, “Pulmo Reef Dive Shop”, which was founded by their father, Don Juan Castro in 1991, and was operational until 1996.
Later Juan worked as a captain and snorkel guide at “Pepe’s Dive Center”, another local company. In 2003 he participated in the first efforts of volunteer monitoring of sea turtles in the reserve, while being in charge of overall administration of the local restaurant “La Palapa”.
Javier worked at Pacific Coast Adventures Cabo San Lucas as captain, and certified as divemaster in 1998, later working as a diving guide and returning to “Pepe’s Dive Center” in Cabo Pulmo. From 2000 to 2007 he was diving guide and later became general manager of “Under Water Diversions” in Cabo San Lucas.
In 2004 they decided to associate and founded Cabo Pulmo EcoAdventures, where Juan is in charge of overall management with Javier as operations director. EcoAdventures as a company has participated in various workshops and programs to strengthen local tourism companies; actively participates in the Advisory Council of the National Park Cabo Pulmo and in the Community Committee of Cabo Pulmo, where Juan has served as treasurer.
